Chithirathai ( Alpinia Galanga) 200 gms



The botanical name of Chitharathai is Alpinia galanga. It is a rhizome with culinary and medicinal uses. Though it resembles (and is related to) ginger in appearance, it tastes little like ginger. In its raw form, galangal has a soapy, earthy aroma and a pine-like flavor with a faint hint of citrus. It is available as a powder.

HEALTH BENEFITS:            

  • For cough with sputum, a piece of rhizome of this plant is slowly chewed. This is also good for vomiting.
  • For all sorts of digestive and respiratory ailments in infants and children, this rhizome is baked or heated and given after mixing with honey and breast milk.
  • 1 to 3 gram of powder of this rhizome is administered thrice daily for rheumatic ailments.
  • For digestive problems, 1 to 5 grams of choornam or powder of this rhizome can be administered twice daily before food.
